Background:

CareWeb is a complex medical information system launched in 1997. It provides medical records, collaborative document editing, doctor/patient scheduling and internal communication support. Our team applied various user research and usability evaluation methods to identify the strengths and areas for improvement.

Evaluation Process:

1. Explored the system in evaluation. Completed the generalized transition network (GTN).

2. Conducted user interviews to understand users' workflows, behavioral patterns when using the system, and goals. Constructed personas & scenarios.

3. Performed literature reviews to better understand the state of the art in the area of patient electronic record systems.

4. Performed a comparative analysis to benchmark system strengths and weaknesses compared to others.

5. Deployed a survey to verify the findings from previous research, identify use of feature trends, and gauge user satisfaction on the system.

6. Based on previous findings of interviews and the survey, conducted a heuristic evaluation to identify the single user and groupware usability issues of the system, and rate their severity.

7. Conducted usability testing session and evaluate the system in terms of overall usability, functionality, and aesthetics.
